A sad announcement...

It is with deep regret and profound sadness that GAVO announces the passing of our Youth Volunteering Officer, Sian Sweet, after a short illness.

Sian joined GAVO in December 2005, initially working as a Grants Administrator responsible for a number of local and European funded grants in Blaenau Gwent. 10 years ago the opportunity arose for Sian to become an integral part of the Volunteering Team. She also held a second job as a Records Clerk in Nevill Hall Hospital, for 18 months running alongside her GAVO jobs.

Sian had also previously volunteered her time with both a Playscheme for Children with Disabilities and with Victim Support.

Sian quickly showed that she had a passion for helping young people in Blaenau Gwent, supporting hundreds to achieve their volunteering goals and helping them personally develop themselves.

Supporting young people interested in volunteering was Sian’s passion and her extremely caring nature and ability to just ‘click’ with them and make them feel at ease, meant that she was actively involved in changing many people’s lives. Without Sian’s positivity and sheer determination to break down barriers for young people, many wouldn’t have gone on to achieve their goals.

Sian’s friendly and professional nature enabled her to forge many great working relationships and friendships with colleagues at GAVO and through the wider Third Sector network she worked in and many Organisations and Community Groups valued her support and advice enormously.

Sian was an active supporter of the #IWill campaign and encouraged and supported one of her young volunteers to become an Ambassador. She went ‘above and beyond’ to accompany this young volunteer to attend a weekend Event in London last year, helping the volunteer to overcome their anxiety about travelling alone and meeting strangers. It was so typical of Sian to give up her entire weekend so that this young person could achieve their aspirations.

Sian was highly valued and respected and her passing is truly a great loss to GAVO, the young people of Blaenau Gwent and the wider communities she worked in throughout Gwent. She will be profoundly missed by everyone whose lives she touched.

We are planning to create a Memory Book of all Sian’s achievements, happy moments, and friendships here at GAVO. If you would like to contribute a message or memory of Sian, including photographs please email them to us at volunteering@gavo.org.uk

Once this is completed we will pass it onto Sian’s husband.
