GAVO Cash 4 U Grant - helping Newport Scouts & Guides to put on a show
Updated: Apr 16, 2019
Our Youth Cash 4 U Panel have given out small grants* each year to a wide range of Youth-Led Projects to help increase youth volunteering in Gwent. One such project was the 'Newport Scout & Guide Gang Show' which was awarded £800 to cover costs of lighting and sound and costumes for the Gang Show to be held in June.
The funding has helped Hannah Snelling (the grant recipient) with gaining many leadership, presentation and people management skills. In addition the funding has helped other young Volunteers (14-25yrs) gain numerous new skills during rehearsals. Some were able to help the Choreographer in teaching dances and were able to help their peers in practicing.
One of the volunteers has taken up responsibility for running the tuck shop, interacting with the younger members of the cast whilst also monitoring stock, handling money and overseeing setting up and packing away, including the of locking away the stock.
During 'Show Week', many young people from Newport's Rangers and Explorer Units will be called upon for various roles. They will be interacting with the public by selling raffle tickets and programmes, whilst showing the guests to their seats in the auditorium. Those over 18 will be able to enhance their leadership skills by chaperoning in the changing rooms and providing care to younger members of the cast.
These individuals will be able to add this to their volunteering hours and some will be using this to work towards their qualifications and awards, such as the Queen's Guide Awards and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.
The gang are looking forward to it all coming together in June! The week long shows will be held at the Dolman Theatre in Newport.
