£135,000 awarded to community projects across Newport

Updated: Jun 13

3 members of the Bundles Baby Clothing Bank are presented with a Cheque for £5000 on the stage at the Dolman Theatre in Newport. They are stood in front of a fairy lighting backdrop and are smiling whilst holding up the cheque.

On the 3rd & 4th of June 36 projects from across Newport met at the Dolman Theatre for the “Our Voice Our Choice Our City, Participatory Budgeting voting event" which saw £135000 given to support 28 projects across the city.

Unlike many other funding programmes, the winning bids were chosen by the public at the event through a voting system following 3 minute presentations about the project plan, the impact it will have and what they will be spending the funding on.

Projects would need to address at least one of the following themes:

·         Young People’s Emotional Wellbeing

·         Women’s Emotional Wellbeing

·         Loneliness/ Social Isolation

With so many worthy projects the event was the perfect way to hear all about the amazing work undertaken and the people involved in creating and delivering them for our local community.

Unfortunately, with so many applications there were of course groups who were unsuccessful on this occasion and the Newport GAVO team area already looking to support these groups to apply for alternative funding sources to enable the project to take place.
