Funding for Warm Hubs is now available to maintain community warmth

Updated: 2 days ago

*Applications for this fund have now closed

Through funding secured from the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund, GAVO and Newport City Council are inviting community groups and charities to apply for up to £5000 to help deliver community driven activities and hubs that supports people during the winter months through Warm Hub Sessions.

Last year funding supported over 400 Warm Space sessions and, incredibly, more than 6000 attendances through the coldest period of the year, Newport City Council and GAVO are keen to see funding applications from more constituted community organisations with the capacity to provide sessions for the community from mid-October until the 31st March 2025.

What is a warm hub?

Warm Hubs (also known as Warm Banks, Warm Spaces, Cosy Corners or something similar) are safe and warm places within the local community where people can go to keep warm during the colder weather. With domestic fuel prices rising dramatically, it is expected that many people will struggle to keep their homes at a healthy temperature - particularly the elderly, the vulnerable and people who are at home all day (such as home workers).

But these funded sessions should be more than just a space to sit and keep warm. Organisations seeking this funding will need to think around what else they can provide to people using the warm spaces. Whether that's advice and support sessions, arts & crafts activities, food and refreshments.

The panel considering applications will be looking for the "added value" that organisations are able to offer in their provision and GAVO will look to help promote upcoming sessions through our website and social media.

How do we apply?

Full guidance and criteria are available to download below, GAVO is more than happy to discuss project ideas before committing time and resources to writing an application. An informal chat can be arranged by emailing our Community Development Officer or join Dan at one of the upcoming drop-in sessions.
