During Tree Planting Week (23–27 March), Rhymney Memorial Park was transformed thanks to the incredible efforts of 77 volunteers from a range of organisations.
Coordinated by GAVO in partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council (CCBC) and the Public Services Board (PSB), the initiative brought the community together with a shared goal: creating a greener, more resilient local environment.

Despite challenging weather conditions, volunteers successfully planted 1,500 saplings, forming new hedgerows and a mini forest within the park. These new green spaces will play an important role in supporting flood prevention measures for Rhymney High Street, contributing to the development of a natural anti-flood plain.

Beyond the immediate environmental impact, the project also supports wider decarbonisation efforts. Tree planting is a vital tool in capturing and storing carbon dioxide, helping to reduce greenhouse gas levels over time. As the newly planted trees and hedgerows mature, they will continue to absorb carbon, contributing to long-term climate change mitigation.
Enhancing green infrastructure in urban areas also brings a range of additional benefits.

Increased biodiversity, improved air quality, and better regulation of local temperatures all contribute to creating healthier, more sustainable, and climate-resilient communities.
GAVO played a key role in coordinating volunteer recruitment ahead of the planting week, helping to bring together individuals and organisations committed to making a difference.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make this project such a success.
