Congratulations Edward Watts MBE Chair of Scouts Cymru, The Mission to Seafarers and GAVO, on receiving the Inspiration Award 2024 from the Merchant Navy Welfare Board.
Edward along with expert volunteers and with the input of young people and working with the Mission to Seafarers have developed a new Programme/badge for young people in Scouts Cymru exploring the World of Seafaring.
Through activities such as cooking dishes from around the world, learning about life on board vessels and the day-to-day challenges faced by Seafarers. Through exploring the World of Seafaring young people can also explore important topics such as sustainability, diversity, trade, wellbeing and many more. This is an exciting addition to the current Scouting Programme and ties into other badges and awards, the programme will also allow the Mission to raise awareness with Young People. The Programme looks to build on already existing educational resources produced by Mission to Seafarers with an additional focus on how Scouts can impact their local seafaring community.
The Programme will be adapted to each section of Scouting to engage our Young People in each age group and for our Explorers a key element would include how this Programme can result in achieving Top Awards. The key Top Award which this Programme would link to would be the Queen’s Scout Award which is internationally recognised and is closely linked with the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Part of the QSA is based around International, Community and Values. This Programme includes an Explorer module-based section which supports our Young People to achieve these Top Awards. The aim of this module would to be leave a lasting impact and to be based around a port local to the participant.
