This summer, communities across the UK are coming together for something special—and you’re invited.

From 5–8 June 2026, The Big Lunch and The Big Help Out are teaming up for one big weekend of friendship, food, fun and action. It’s a chance for all of us - neighbours, volunteers, community groups and organisations - to come together, connect, and make a difference locally.

At GAVO, we see every day how powerful community action can be. This weekend is a chance to be part of something bigger - while making a difference right where you live.

Whether it’s something small or something bigger, everyone can be part of it.

What is “One Big Do”?

Think of it as a weekend where community spirit takes centre stage.

You could:

  • Host a BBQ or street get-together

  • Organise a litter pick in your local area

  • Help out at a community group or charity

  • Pop in for a cuppa and a chat with neighbours

  • Support a local cause for a few hours

It’s simple: meet, eat and lend a hand.

Why get involved?

Because small actions make a big difference.

Taking part can:

  • Bring people together and reduce isolation

  • Help you meet new people and build friendships

  • Boost confidence and wellbeing

  • Introduce you to volunteering in a relaxed, low-pressure way

  • Strengthen your local community

Get involved as a community group or organisation

If you’re a local organisation, this is a brilliant opportunity to:

  • Welcome new volunteers

  • Showcase what you do

  • Say thank you to your existing volunteers

  • Create a fun, social event for your community

You could:

  • Host a Big Lunch as part of Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June)

  • Offer short, beginner-friendly volunteering activities (1–3 hours works best)

  • Invite people to “try out” volunteering in a relaxed way

Across the UK, millions of people will be getting involved—and together, we can create a real wave of positive action in our communities.

So… what will you do?
