Newport Carers’ Forum recently brought unpaid Carers from across the city together for a Question Time–style event, giving them the chance to put their priorities and concerns directly to several of the candidates standing in the May 2026 Welsh Senedd elections.
Held at The Place, the session focused solely on the experiences and needs of unpaid Carers—from access to support and assessments, to funding pressures, and how each political party plans to recognise and value Carers in future policy and manifestos.
Candidates from Welsh Labour, the Welsh Conservatives, the Green Party, the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru took part, with written responses also provided where representatives were unable to attend. The format allowed Carers to ask their own questions, challenge current systems, and highlight the day‑to‑day realities of caring.
The discussion covered a wide range of issues including:
Support for Carers within party manifestos
Whether Wales should appoint a dedicated Carers’ Commissioner
The need for better funding, consistent assessments and more Carer Officers
Challenges caused by short‑term grants and insecure funding for community groups
Ideas to improve Carers’ Allowance and allow Carers to share caring responsibilities
The event was organised and delivered entirely by the Forum, demonstrating the strength of the local Carer community and their commitment to ensuring unpaid Carers’ voices influence future decision‑making.
