Newport Local Nature Partnership Small Grants Scheme Opens for Applications
Community groups and organisations across Newport are being encouraged to develop projects that support local wildlife and biodiversity through the Newport Local Nature Partnership (LNP) Small Grants Scheme 2026/27.
The scheme offers grants ranging from £500 to £4,000 to help create and improve habitats, increase opportunities for nature-based learning and engagement, support species recording, and strengthen ecosystem resilience across Newport.
Funded through the Welsh Government's Local Places for Nature programme and administered by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action, via Newport City Council, the scheme is available to constituted groups and organisations delivering biodiversity projects in publicly accessible spaces within the Newport local authority area.
What can be funded?
The programme supports projects that create lasting biodiversity assets for Newport. Examples could include:
Creating or enhancing wildlife habitats
Planting native species
Developing pollinator-friendly spaces
Installing wildlife features
Recording and monitoring local species
Activities that help people learn about and engage with nature
Projects must demonstrate long-term benefits, with successful applicants committing to maintaining funded assets for at least five years.
Who can apply?
Applications are welcomed from constituted community groups and organisations that:
Have a governing document and bank account
Hold appropriate public liability insurance
Have permission from the landowner where works will take place
Can demonstrate how their project will benefit biodiversity
Are delivering projects within the Newport local authority area
Provide public access to the site, or where appropriate, access for school children
Important information
The funding supports capital costs only and cannot be used for revenue expenditure such as staffing costs, volunteer time, or venue hire. Projects should represent good value for money and, where possible, make use of existing resources and local suppliers.
Groups are encouraged to think carefully about the biodiversity benefits their project will deliver and how they will engage local people and evaluate the impact of their work.
Applications close on 1st November 2026, if successful all invoices relating to the project must be submitted by 1st March 20207
