Community organisations across Wales are invited to apply for funding to deliver activities celebrating National Windrush Day 2026, which marks 78 years of the Windrush generation in Wales. The Windrush Cymru @79 Grant supports projects that recognise and promote the historical, cultural, and social contributions of the Windrush generation and Commonwealth communities.
The grant programme is Welsh Government funded and administered by Race Council Cymru, led by Windrush Cymru Elders. 2026 will be the ninth National Windrush Day in Wales and the fifth consecutive year this grant scheme has supported community‑led celebrations.
About the Grant
Organisations can apply for grants of up to £2,000 to deliver activities taking place between June and September 2026, including events connected to National Windrush Day on 22 June.
Funded projects should align with at least one of the following aims:
Raising awareness of National Windrush Day and the Windrush generation
Promoting the historical, economic, and cultural contributions of the Windrush generation to Wales
Providing education or learning opportunities linked to Windrush history and legacy
Demonstrating direct benefit to Windrush generation elders and showing how they will be involved
Supporting the principles of the Anti‑racist Wales Action Plan
Who Can Apply?
Applications are welcome from organisations that:
Are based and working in Wales
Are a registered charity, CIC, or constituted community group
Have safeguarding and governance arrangements in place
Can plan, deliver, and report on a community activity
Engage with Windrush generation elders or wider Commonwealth communities
What the Grant Can Support
The funding can be used for revenue costs such as sessional staff, facilitators, materials, refreshments, and travel linked to the activity. Capital costs, equipment purchases, and core organisational overheads are not eligible.
Community‑Led Assessment
Applications will be assessed by an independent panel of Windrush Elders and Commonwealth representatives, with Welsh Government observing the process. This ensures awards are rooted in lived experience, community knowledge, and cultural understanding.
