Third Sector Learning & Development
GAVO recognises that the third sector faces considerable challenges due to ongoing economic and social challenges scross Gwent. In response to these challenges, we are keen to promote the culture of the “learning organisation” within the third sector.

This is where charities, social enterprises and voluntary community groups prioritise and actively foster continuous learning and improvement, knowledge sharing, and adaptation to change in order to help mitigate challenges and promote organisational resilience and sustainability within the sector.

It's a culture where trustees, directors, employees and volunteers are encouraged to actively acquire new skills, modify behaviors, and leverage insights to improve organisational performance and achieve goals and objectives.

To achieve this, GAVO has recently established a Third Sector Learning and Development Unit to provide the sector with high quality, professional learning and development and promote learning within the third sector.

Our Third Sector Learning & Development Lead holds a Master’s degree in Occupational (Organisational) Psychology from Cardiff University and has considerable experience of practicing Organisational Development in the public, private and third sectors since 1998.
What is Learning & Development?
In a nutshell, Learning & Development (L&D) is the systematic process of enhancing the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of the people within an organisation to improve performance and contribute to its overall success. L&D involves a range of activities, including training programs, mentorship/coaching, and informal learning opportunities. L&D helps an organisation to develop and grow to manage change effectively and become more resilient and sustainable.
What do we Provide?
We currently provide a wide range of bespoke, interactive Organisational Development Workshops for all third sector organisations, including for example: Trustee Roles and Responsibilities, Director Roles and Responsibilities, Organisational Visioning (brand identity, vision, mission and values), Social Enterprise Business Development, Strategic Planning, Developing and Effective Marketing Strategy, Effective Leadership and Managing Staff and Volunteers Effectively. We can also work with you to develop workshops or training that directly meets your organisation’s needs, as well as providing direct development support.
We are also currently piloting a Community Leadership training programme which we hope to launce as a fully accredited course early in 2026.
