After graduating from university and navigating the uncertainties of post-pandemic life, Frank McQuillan found himself searching for purpose and connection. That search led him to The Place, Newport, run by Tin Shed Theatre CIC, where he began volunteering—a decision that would shape his future in unexpected ways.
Frank initially joined as a volunteer, eager to try something new and step outside his comfort zone. Over the course of nine months, he immersed himself in the vibrant community of The Place, discovering not only a passion for the arts and community engagement but also a renewed sense of confidence and belonging.
“I most enjoyed trying something completely different, being taken out of my comfort zone,” Frank shared. “I gained confidence, met loads of brilliant people, and had something to do and be proud of.”
His dedication and enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed. Frank’s contributions were so impactful that he was eventually offered a role as Front of House & Volunteer Manager—a testament to the value of volunteering as a pathway to personal and professional growth.
One of Frank’s proudest moments came when he was nominated in the Welsh Culture & Heritage Category of the 2023 GAVO Volunteering Awards, a recognition that highlighted not only his individual efforts but also the importance of volunteer-driven cultural spaces like The Place.
When asked if he would recommend volunteering, Frank’s response was unequivocal:
“Yes, 100%! Volunteering at The Place—or anywhere, for that matter—is a great way to meet people, build confidence, and explore new opportunities, everyone has skills and talents they may not even be aware of, that are a much-needed asset to local volunteer led groups and organisations.”
To anyone considering volunteering, Frank offers this advice:
“Volunteering is a great way to try out new things in different settings with different people. You never know where it might lead. Once I started volunteering my life completely changed for the better.”
