What is a Community Action Network event? We know that when people get together good things tend to happen. Community Action Networks (CANs) are a way to bring local people, community groups and organisations together. A CAN event can range from the serious to the silly, the campaigning to the caring and the artistic to the athletic. The important thing is creating the opportunity for people to get together, because when they do…they collaborate, exchange acts of kindness and share and learn from one another.
These are the perfect foundations for building strong communities. Community Action Networks are led by the community and supported by GAVO and MCC and other partners who can add resources such as money, training and coordinator time are very welcome.
Our latest CAN was our first themed event…Community Growing! We kicked off the day with unbeLEAFable workshops from the Crafty Pickle Company, Sue’s Nant Y Bedd Garden and Cherry’s No Dig Garden. We then had an incredible lunch prepared by Elaine Blanchard from Monmouthshire Food Partnership using locally sourced produce...we are still thinking about those tasty cheese and kimchi sandwiches. In the afternoon we had a wonderful presentation from Angharad from The Preservation Society where she talked about her work within the community and shared tips on reducing food waste. Our favourite quote of the day was "Don't feed your food bin!"
