Community and third sector organisations in Gwent are being invited to apply for funding to deliver short break opportunities for unpaid carers through the Carers Trust Short Breaks Scheme.
Backed by Welsh Government funding, the scheme will run from October 2026 to March 2029 and aims to improve carers’ wellbeing, resilience and quality of life by giving them a meaningful break from their caring role.
How much funding is available in your area?
Funding is allocated by local authority area, with the following amounts available per year:
Blaenau Gwent – up to £45,000
Caerphilly – up to £118,500
Monmouthshire – up to £57,200
Newport – up to £93,000
Organisations can apply for a minimum of £20,000 per year, with funding available for up to 2½ years. In most areas, funding is expected to be shared between multiple organisations.
What is a “short break”?
A short break can be an activity, a service, or practical support that gives carers time away from their caring responsibilities and helps sustain caring relationships. This could include group activities, day trips, replacement care, wellbeing breaks, or micro‑grants for carers to arrange their own breaks.
The scheme is designed to be flexible, personalised and creative, with a focus on carers who need support the most.
Who can apply?
Applications are open to not‑for‑profit third sector organisations, including community groups, charities, social enterprises and CICs. Organisations must be active, able to operate in Wales, and have experience supporting carers (or be working in partnership with an organisation that does).
Key dates
Expression of Interest deadline: 10am, Monday 2 February 2026
Successful applicants will be invited to submit a full application later in the year.
If your organisation is supporting unpaid carers in Caerphilly, Newport, Blaenau Gwent or Monmouthshire, this is a significant opportunity to secure funding to make a real difference.
