Working together for a more neuroinclusive Newport

Updated: 11 hours ago

Organisations from across Newport's third sector are coming together to shape positive change for neurodivergent people.
Following discussions at the Newport Third Sector Network meeting in August, a dedicated working group has been established, led by Third Sector forum member Tessa Polniaszek, to contribute to Newport City Council's ongoing work to develop a strategy for a neurodiversity-friendly city, while also exploring a broader vision for a neuroinclusive Newport. The group will take a co-production approach, bringing organisations and communities together to help shape this work.
The group met for the first time in September to discuss how organisations can work collectively to ensure the voices and experiences of neurodivergent people are reflected in the developing strategy.
The meeting included presentations and interactive workshop activities, allowing participants to identify the barriers currently faced by neurodivergent people in Newport, as well as the changes needed to make the city a more inclusive and supportive place to live, learn, work and thrive.
Discussions highlighted the value of bringing together organisations with different experiences and areas of expertise. By sharing knowledge, evidence and lived experience, the group hopes to develop a strong, collective voice that can contribute positively to future conversations and decision-making around neurodivergence in Newport.
This meeting marks the beginning of what participants hope will become an influential and collaborative network. Group members are keen to review the findings from the public consultation, which remains open throughout October, and are encouraging as many people as possible to take part and share their views.
GAVO's Newport team is supporting the development of the working group, while ensuring that the direction and priorities remain driven by the organisations and communities involved.
Dan Coast, Community Development Officer at GAVO, said:
"One of the greatest strengths of the third sector is its ability to bring organisations, communities and lived experience together around a shared goal. The enthusiasm shown by this group demonstrates just how much can be achieved when organisations collaborate, listen to one another and work collectively to influence positive change. By speaking with a united voice, Newport's third sector can play an important role in helping create a city where neurodivergent people feel understood, included and supported."
The next in-person meeting of the group will take place in early November, following the conclusion of the consultation period.
